I doubt you will ever wear the contacts out in it. The motor starter is very reliable, but you can have a coil burn out etc. With a motor starter, your pressure switch should last forever, but it should last a long time anyway in the type duty you describe. They appear to have the same motor, but it doesn't say for certain and the amperage is listed different 28 with the magnetic starter vs 40 for the pressure switch start. I know i've had capacitors on grain augers go out and need repair, never had a problem with magnetic starter. If you find a local retailer they will all be cheaper, i believe our 7.5 was only $2000 I see there is a big difference difference in $ between the 5 hp capacitor and 7.5 with magnetic starter. I looked on northern tool and i see the models your talking about. I believe our big R was $400 more for 7.5 hp with magnetic start over the 5 hp with capacitor. Just want to get more air for truck tires and a 1 inch gun. Is it worth the extra? I use it in the farm shop, not every day and not heavily. Both seem identical except one has a magnetic start while the other is capacitor. I found two Quincy air compressors at Northern Tool. I think they recommend 100hr change intervals. I installed an hour meter before i ever started it up and I'm only at 5.5 hours 4 months later. Iwasn't aware you had to change it yearly for the warranty, i thought you just did it by his run. But with such light usage it really hurts to cough up the $80.00 every year for the maintenance kit. After 5 years I'll have enough oil left over from all the maintenance kits to last me another 5 years. I only run the compressor when I'm in the shop (usually on weekends). I only change the oil according to the recommended hours of operation in the manual (I added an hour meter to the compressor when I first installed it) so I only change it about once a year. But not much you can do if you want to keep your 5 year warranty going the full five years. I think this is a huge rip off by Quincy and an even bigger rip off if you compare the price of their Quin Cip oil to other equivalent oils. When I first purchased the compressor I asked the dealer why the maintenance kit was so expensive he said it was because it extends your warranty. He said let me check your account, and came back and said you're right my bad, and sold me the maintenance kit. I told him that they told me in order to keep the 5 year warranty I had to buy the maintenance kit. He said I could purchase the Quincy oil and filters separately a lot cheaper. The new guy at the Quincy dealer at first brought out 2 quarts of Quincy oil and the filter and I told him that in the past they always sold me the maintenance kit. Just picked up my third maintenance kit for $80.00. QT54 has been a great compressor, kind of noisy though.
